Joe's Italian Dinners has always been about more than what is on the plate.
It is about family, tradition, hospitality, and the feeling that when someone walks through our doors, they are not just entering a restaurant. They are stepping into a home filled with warmth, laughter, and the smell of something good simmering on the stove.
At the heart of Joe's was Giuseppe "Joe" Onda, an Italian immigrant from Serra San Bruno, Calabria. He came to America as a young man carrying more than a suitcase. He brought the traditions of his village, the comfort of simple, honest food, the sound of laughter around a table, and a deep belief that hospitality is something you live, not something you advertise.
Joe was not interested in fancy titles. If someone called him "Chef," he would gently wave it off with a smile and a shake of his head.
"No. I'm just Joe."
Simple words, but they said everything about him.
Joe believed good Italian food did not need to be complicated. It needed to be made with heart, fresh ingredients, and the kind of care you can taste. Meals were meant to be shared, passed around the table, and enjoyed slowly. In Joe's world, dinner was an experience, a gathering, and a moment to be together.
Over the years, Joe's Italian Dinners became more than a family restaurant. It became a place where life happened. The dining room filled with clinking glasses, overlapping conversations, and plates being set down with care. Families celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones. Couples came for quiet date nights. Children grew up in the booths, then returned years later with children of their own.
Through it all, Joe was rarely alone. Night after night, by his side was his daughter, Angelina.
The kitchen was where their story quietly unfolded. Angelina learned by being there, watching her father's hands move with purpose, listening to the way he spoke to guests like old friends, stepping in wherever she was needed, and learning the heartbeat of the restaurant one night at a time.
Joe had a name for her that always made her smile.
"My sidekick."
She was not just helping him run a restaurant. She stood beside him as he passed down the recipes that never needed writing, the instinct for when a dish was just right, the importance of greeting every guest like they mattered, and the quiet pride of doing things the right way even when no one was watching.
In those years, it was not just a father and daughter working side by side. It was a legacy being built in real time, one plate, one shift, and one shared glance across a busy kitchen.
Today, that legacy lives on through his sidekick. Angelina continues what she and her father built together: generous Italian dinners, familiar flavors that feel like home, hard work without shortcuts, laughter above the noise of a busy room, and the belief that every person who walks through the door deserves to feel welcomed, seen, and cared for.
Joe was known as "the man in the kitchen," but he was never too busy to step out from behind the line. He would greet guests with a grin, crack a joke at just the right moment, or walk a child through the kitchen like it was the most important tour in the world. At the end of a long night, as the lights dimmed and the last tables were cleared, he would often pause, look around, and say:
"We made it another day."
Joe is no longer standing in the kitchen, but he is far from gone. You can feel him in the worn recipes passed from hand to hand, in the rhythm of the staff who still cook with care, in the stories guests tell at the table, and most of all, in Angelina, who still carries his voice, his lessons, and his love for this place in everything she does.
Some things change with time, but the heart of Joe's never will. Joe's Italian Dinners is his life's work, his love, his laughter, and his table that never stopped making room for more.
Every evening we welcome guests, we share a little piece of Joe with you. Many members of our team are not just staff. They are family. They worked alongside Joe, learned from him, and knew him personally. Each carries a piece of his spirit, shaped by his kindness, generosity, and quiet way of teaching people to care for one another without ever asking for recognition.
Benvenuti. Welcome to Joe's.
